Week in Review (January 26th, 2025)

👽 Personal

  • This post, I Ditched the Algorithm for RSS was fantastic. It taught me some great tricks of how to maximize RSS usage with reddit and that allowed me to cut out visiting reddit, unless I wanted to see the comments. I spent an evening trying to set up RSS for everything, and it's amazing how well it streamlines my user experience.
  • I'm very disappointed in the drama that popped up on the IndieWeb this week. I said it six months ago, and I'll say it again, we are supposed to be better than this. Then again, maybe Manu is right.
  • I'm working on a new "old" project to unify the stuff I write online. I'm pretty excited about it. It's honestly been ten years in the making.

🏋️Healthy Living

  • I did quite well staying under my calories again this week.
  • The ice and snow threw off my workout plans a bit, but I did get some walking in.

📺 Watched (A Glimpse at Some of the Stuff I Watched)

  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer (S2 E7-E16)  - My wife and I continued our slow watch of Buffy.
  • The Night Agent (S2 E1-E2) - A great start to the new season of The Night Agent. They ramped up the action and it works!
  • Supernatural (S1 E4-E9) - I've seen the first season a few times, but I think watching Buffy just made me crave a bit more supernatural stories in my life.
  • The Rocketeer - I was the prime age to enjoy The Rocketeer when it was released, but I wasn't thrilled with it back then. Now that I have an appreciation for pulp characters, I find a lot to enjoy in The Rocketeer, but I think I'm missing that crucial piece of nostalgia to really make it special to me.
  • Iron Man - It's been a very long time since I've seen Iron Man and wow is it an enjoyable flick. The CGI is great, because they didn't try to make everything CGI. The jokes land, the characters are charming, and despite being an origin film it's very good.
  • Solomon Kane - Possibly my favorite sword and sorcery film, this underappreciated gem from the late 2000's is a blast to watch with an amazing score. The CGI is a bit rough, due to some budgeting issues, but this film deserved more eyeballs.
  • The Damned - This slow moving period piece was just what I was looking for the evening I watched it. It's not going to be for everybody and probably not something I'd watch again, but I did enjoy it.
  • The Faculty - I've seen The Faculty many times, and it's one of my favorite late 90s horror/sci-fi films. This viewing was just as great as the rest, and I feel the film holds up well. The 4K remaster is also quite good.
  • I Know What You Did Last Summer - I feel like every time I watch this film, I like it less. It's a perfectly entertaining slasher, but I don't think it holds up as well as Scream or Urban Legend. I do appreciate the soundtrack, but I'm not sure how many more watches are in my future.
